{"id":5739,"date":"2025-09-15T01:11:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T05:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rasa-usa.org\/?p=5739"},"modified":"2025-11-14T20:54:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T01:54:24","slug":"2025-rasa-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rasa-usa.org\/en\/conferences\/2025-rasa-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 RASA Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear colleagues and friends!<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a016th International RASA Conference\u00a0will take place on\u00a0November 15\u201316, 2025, at the\u00a0Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, located on the\u00a0Voorhees Mall of Rutgers University\u00a0in\u00a0New Brunswick, New Jersey. This venue holds deep intellectual and cultural significance for the meeting, as the museum\u2019s collection includes over\u00a060,000 works\u2014featuring\u00a0Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art\u00a0from the renowned\u00a0Dodge Collection,\u00a0American art from the eighteenth century to the present.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing RASA\u2019s tradition of dedicating each conference to a notable Russian-speaking scientist from the past, the\u00a02025 Conference will honor Sofya Kovalevskaya\u00a0on the occasion of the\u00a0175th anniversary of her birth. Kovalevskaya (1850\u20131891) was a trailblazing Russian mathematician\u2014the first woman in the world to earn a doctorate in mathematics, the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe, and one of the first women to serve as an editor of a scientific journal. The opening session will feature a special lecture celebrating her life and contributions to science and humanity.<\/p>\n<p>In line with RASA\u2019s tradition, the disciplinary sessions will feature distinguished scientists from various fields:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0mathematics session\u00a0will be dedicated to\u00a0Israel Gelfand\u00a0(1913\u20132009), a prominent Soviet and American mathematician regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century. Gelfand made foundational contributions to group theory, representation theory, functional analysis, and other areas. Notably, he worked at\u00a0Rutgers University, the venue of the 2025 RASA meeting.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0biology and health session\u00a0will highlight\u00a0Lina Stern\u00a0(1875\/1878\u20131968), a Russian and European biologist renowned for her pioneering research on the\u00a0blood\u2013brain barrier, which she described as the\u00a0hemato-encephalic barrier\u00a0in 1921.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0physics session\u00a0will honor\u00a0Vladimir Zakharov, a brilliant Soviet and American physicist and one of the founding members and active participants of American RASA. We plan to feature lectures by Professor Zakharov\u2019s students and former colleagues, and also remember the\u00a0poetry\u00a0that Vladimir Evgenievich wrote throughout his lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A special session on the\u00a0History of Sciences\u00a0will explore key themes centered on Russian and Soviet scientists of the twentieth century. Its goal is to showcase their contributions and foster mutual understanding within the scientific community, engaging researchers across disciplines and generations. Chaired by\u00a0Maria Mayofis, Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian at Amherst College, this session aims to stimulate dialogue and challenge existing perceptions of contemporary Russian science\u2014both within the diaspora and the broader American academic environment.<\/p>\n<p>A central feature of the 2025 RASA Conference will be the\u00a0roundtable on \u201cChallenges for the Future and Possible Responses,\u201d\u00a0bringing together prominent scholars from various disciplines, including\u00a0Oleg Itskhoki\u00a0(economics),\u00a0Yulia Sineokaya\u00a0(philosophy),\u00a0Igor Efimov\u00a0(health sciences), and\u00a0Vadim Gladyshev\u00a0(life sciences). Moderated by\u00a0Alexander Kabanov\u00a0(chemistry), the discussion will focus on how society might adapt to rapid technological advancements (including AI), climate change, geopolitical tensions, and social transformation in an evolving global landscape.<\/p>\n<p>We warmly encourage you to participate and register for the meeting.\u00a0Registration is open and free.
